DON'T CALL ME BABY
While I love living in France, there is one thing which I will NEVER EVER get used to. And that is being called ‘Madame’. Now, I acknowledge that my teenage years are well behind me but to be called ‘Madame’ makes me feel like I’m about 8o years old. And I don’t like it. For goodness sake, why can’t they just simply say to strangers ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’ and ‘thank you’ like we do!

Cause in France, to be called Madame is not a question of age but "statut matrimonial", a 20years old girl can be called Madame as she just got married. Such as a 80years young lady still single can be called Mademoiselle!!! Sorry!!
Thanks for the clarification, anon, but how on earth can the lady for whom I've opened the door know exactly who is married and who is not. Or the baker? Or the dry cleaner? Or do they just assume that everyone over a 'certain age' is married. Pff, j'vous jure.
Well, on the other hand, you are getting old too, so, madame is kind of appropriate :-)
Oi cheeky, a bit of respect, please! Just because I can’t do a whole troisième mi-temps these days and my memory is failing .. err, sorry, what were you saying again? And do I know you, Monsieur?
