TOP14 FINAL

I don't watch French television very often because (a) it's not all that good (except for helping to improve my French) and (b) it reminds me too much of being in Paris. However, yesterday I could not not watch the feisty match for the Brennus between Toulouse and Clermont. My (pretend) money was on Clermont and the first half was all you could hope for, (although I have to admit even little old me could read the steps leading to William Servat's try). However, the second half really saw the balance tip as Toulouse put themselves in sixth gear and Clermont became nervous and disintegrated. Never mind Aurélien Rougerie, even I felt tearful at the end ..

As an aside, French adverts can sometimes be a bit risqué but I saw one (about getting an AIDS test) that I don't expect to see any time soon on British television!

RUGBY NEWS

The news from last week-end's rugby was not good. England did not manage to beat New Zealand. Once again. Italy, in their summer tour game, did not score any points against South Africa (who scored 26). And Stade are not in the final of the TOP14, and therefore say bye-bye to the Brennus, after losing 31-13 to Toulouse. It has to be said these defeats did not involve any chouchou of mine, but still ..

SOLSTICE

Today, there are more hours of daylight than on any other day of the year. And apparently, Stonehenge saw more hippies than ever to welcome the dawn this morning. But according to a new theory, there's healing in them there stones and Timewatch have a programme about just this in the autumn. Anyway, enjoy that longest day while you can!

HAPPY

Today, would you believe, is the happiest day of the year. It's true because scientists have done their research and produced a formula for it:
O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He
where O stands for being outdoors and outdoor activity, N for nature, S for social interaction, Cpm for childhood summers and positive memories, T for temperature and He for holidays and looking forward to time off.

Quite how that equates to making today specifically the happiest day, I'm not entirely sure, but now that you know, there's no excuse.

THE 'ULTIMATE'

Guinness have created a (really scary) hybrid of the 'best' of the Premiership's outstanding players this season. The resulting photograph is far too frightening to publish so I'll just give you the link: http://www.guinnesspremiership.com/254_24019.php

Nick Easter fractured his hand (the second metacarpal of his right hand to be exact) during last week's game against the Barbarians, which means he is out of the summer tour. Oh well, at least he gets a proper rest this summer to come back stronger for the new season and the VI Nations!
On a more cheerful note, Stade won their game against Biarritz last night 22-18!

Today, Stade play Biarritz and the Bergabrothers make their return in the starting line-up. I hope they are back to their winning, try-scoring ways!

LILLE

This week, I have had a very busy time of it but on Wednesday, I had a nice break and went on a day trip to Lille where I learned a little bit about its history and its buildings. The town is very old, dating back to 640, and was originally known as L'Isle because the area was very marshy, subsequently filled in and built upon. It has the second largest Musée des Beaux Arts in France, (after guess which? ;p). It also has a Notre Dame (above). And its most famous sons are Louis Pasteur and Charles de Gaulle. Do you think I missed my vocation as a tourist guide? ;p
